- Born in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire to a father who was a a glaze maker, Alan studied acting with RADA and went straight into rep. He did 49 plays in as many weeks. He loved doing Shakespeare and did Lear, Macbeth and Twelfth Night, among others. This was a big change from his family background of gypsies and pirates and his original intention of becoming a monk to help the under- privileged. In keeping with his family background he wore a gold ear-ring. He was married to Diana Dors and lived in a secluded house near Ascot.
