Ruth grew up in northern Minnesota near the Canadian border. She has owned and professionally owned bears for the entertainment industry since the 1970s with her husband, Lyle. They have the largest North American selection of Kodiak and black bears that are used for cinematic films (examples: Quest for Fire (1981), The Jungle Book (1994), The Edge (1997)), television programs (two particular episodes of Walker, Texas Ranger (1993)) and commercials in either the United States or Canada.
