After his first start in show business he quit because he was only getting about £7 a week and he went into the rag trade. Later a friend asked him to make a two week appearance at a theatre to help him out. In the show he impersonated a woman and found that he had a talent for female impersonation and went on from there. Once he was well established he opened his own night club near the West End which even attracted Royalty. If he was appearing in a West End show or at a theatre not too far away from London he would do that show, which would include the usual two performance on a Saturday then be driven to his club and do a performance there. He would always let the audience know that hidden under the glamorous gowns and make up was a fella by going up to the microphone on his first appearance on stage and in a deep masculine voice say 'whotcha Mates' .

Danny or Daniel Patrick Carroll was the youngest of 5 born to Irish carpenter Daniel Patrick Carroll ,who died of TB at 34 when Dan was 18 months old, and his wife Mary Ann. The family moved to London where Mary worked as a seamstress in Soho. At the outbreak of war the family moved to Devon where Danny appeared in school plays including playing Juliet in Romeo & Juliet & Rosalinda in As You Like It. At 17 in 1944 he joined the Royal Navy & his first ship was HMS Alaunia. He acted in concert parties wearing a bed sheet as a sarong and taking off Hedy Lamarr, the native girl in White Cargo. Demobbed in '47 he worked as a window dresser in dept stores then moved to touring in drag shows In one an unknown comic, Harry Secombe urged him to give it up telling him 'You're a nice young man but you've got no talent' Eventually after 5 years with little progress he returned to window dressing & was doing a window display in an Oxford St store when an old friend asked him to replace a drag artist who'd backed out of a revue at a men only show.Danny agreed as long as his name wasn't on the bill so allowing him to continue his normal work. Turning up for rehearsals he asked who Danny la Rue was & he was told it was him as in all his feathers and plumes he was long & lean so they were calling him Danny the Street (Danny la Rue). The revue brought him long runs in the West End cabaret. Finally he gave up normal work & with continuing success in '64 opened his own club in Hanover Square & overnight it became the In Place Princess Margaret & Lord Snowdon were regulars as were many international stars His big break through came with the musical Come Spy With Me with Barbara Windsor in 1966. which led to spectacular revues, & pantomimes all built around him & his spectacular costumes.which cost a large part of the budget. He'd always glamorously walk up to the microphone and in a deep masculine voice boom out 'Watcha Mates'' He packed London's Palace Theatre for 2 years & he was a millionaire but then things started to go wrong His only film, Our Miss Fred' was a flop revealing what the stage didn't, his lack of acting ability, He then started to spend buying The Swan Hotel in, Berkshire in '76 & a 2nd hotel, which was a folly so he had to carry on working to keep them going plus he' wrongly entrusted management to con men resulting in him being forced into liquidation.On top of that his long time manager & friend Jack Hanson died. In 1984 In 2006 Danny had a stroke & sadly it was down hill from there
