Ian was born at Woodley Road, Monkseaton, Northumberland and educated at Whitley Bay High School. and later lived at Stanington He was a member of the Rockliffe Rugby Club and used members and friends in his films and television.The Ridley Arms public house at Stannington stood in for The Black Horse in The Likely Lads.
