Biography

Machiko Kyô was born on March 25, 1924 in Osaka, Japan. She was an actress, known for Rashomon (1950), Ugetsu (1953) and The Teahouse of the August Moon (1956). She died on May 12, 2019 in Tokyo, Japan.

In 2017 received a lifetime achievement award at the Japan Academy Prize ceremony.

Was a dancer at the OSSK (Shouchiku, Shoujo Kageki of Osaka) before joining the DAIEI film company in 1949.

She was the last surviving cast member of 'Rashomon'.

Adopted Machiko Kyo as her stage name when she entered the Osaka Shochiku Kagekidan in 1936 at age 12.

She was a drinking buddy of Masaichi Nagata.

[on Marlon Brando, her co-star in The Teahouse of the August Moon (1956)]: (Glenn) Ford and Brando are most different, Ford is quiet, very yawarakai (tender), Brando is like a small boy, but once he gets on the set he is all they say he is. He radiates, always joking. I watched him very closely throughout the picture and he has a delicate touch.

[on acting in an American film]: This has been my first experience in American films (The Teahouse of the August Moon (1956)) and I am feeling rather in love with the work. Imagine! When I do well the director kisses me, shakes my hand.
