Adonis Kyrou(1923-1985)

Adonis Kyrou was a Greek director, screenwriter, author, critic, and film theorist whose career bridged political experience, artistic practice, and serious intellectual inquiry, earning him enduring recognition as one of the most important international writers on surrealism in cinema. Raised in Athens, he became politically active while still young and was involved in the resistance during the Occupation, experiences that shaped both his worldview and the restless, questioning spirit that later defined his work. After leaving Greece and settling in Paris, he studied literature and journalism while writing under a pseudonym on cultural subjects, gradually establishing himself within European artistic and critical circles. There he developed close ties with leading surrealist figures, including André Breton, and immersed himself in the ideas that would become central to his life's work. Although widely respected as a critic and theorist, Kyrou was also active as a filmmaker, and his most notable screen achievement was To bloko (1965), which received a special mention at the Thessaloniki Film Festival and remains the film most closely associated with his directing career. His greatest legacy, however, came through his writing, especially the landmark book Surrealism in Cinema, along with a broader body of work that explored the relationship between image, imagination, politics, and the subconscious. Across his books, criticism, and filmmaking, he emerged as a singular cultural figure whose influence reached far beyond Greece and helped shape the way surrealist cinema has been understood internationally.
