Biography

Leo K. Kuter was born on February 21, 1897 in Shannon, Illinois, USA. Leo was an art director, known for Key Largo (1948), Rio Bravo (1959) and A Girl in Every Port (1928). Leo was married to Evelyn Edler. Leo died on August 10, 1970 in Laguna Beach, California, USA.

Father of Kay E. Kuter and Jeane Kuter-Harvey.

Art director, briefly at Universal, 1925-1926. Not active again until Juarez (1939) (in conjunction with Anton Grot). Signed by Warners in 1943 and remained there until 1964. Highlights of his work include Key Largo (1948), Come Fill the Cup (1951), Rio Bravo (1959) and A Summer Place (1959).

Attended Manual Arts High School in L.A., subsequently studied art and architecture and became a designer of furniture. First work in the film industry as a draftsman for Paramount in 1921, joining Metro the following year in the same capacity. Graduated to set designer for Pickford in 1923 and full art director at Universal from 1925. Active in several union-related movements; on the board of United Scenic Artists (1928-42) and the Society of Motion Picture Art Directors (from 1941).

Listed in the 1935 Film Daily Year Book as treasurer of the Cinemagundi Club of Hollywood.
