Biography

Roman Kroitor was an influential Canadian filmmaker, producer, and technological pioneer who fundamentally transformed the global cinema experience. He is best remembered as one of the visionary co-founders of the IMAX Corporation, a venture that revolutionized large-format filmmaking and theatre projection worldwide.

Kroitor began his distinguished career at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) in the 1950s. During his time there, he became a leading figure in the direct cinema movement, co-directing acclaimed and ground-breaking documentaries such as Universe (1960) and Lonely Boy (1963). His early creative work was marked by a constant desire to push the technical and visual boundaries of traditional filmmaking.

The spark for IMAX came during the Expo 67 world's fair in Montreal. Kroitor co-created a massive, multi-screen art installation called In the Labyrinth. While the project was a critical success, the complex multi-projector system was difficult to maintain. Seeking a more efficient way to deliver giant-screen imagery using just a single projector, Kroitor teamed up with classmates Graeme Ferguson, Robert Kerr, and engineer William Shaw to found the company that would become IMAX.

Throughout his career, Kroitor balanced his passion for cinematic storytelling with technological innovation, helping to guide IMAX from an experimental format into a global entertainment powerhouse. His immense contributions to the motion picture industry were officially recognized in 1997, when he and his co-founders received a Scientific and Technical Academy Award for their pioneering work.
