When he was a child, his family was persecuted by the Communist regime. His father was taken political prisoner and executed in 1951.
Because of his father's political views, Jiri was expelled from high school and blacklisted from colleges for several years. During this time, he wrote several screenplays.
He was an advisor to Czech president Václav Havel, and served as deputy interior minister.
