Biography

Aleksandra Kovac is an award-winning film composer, music producer and songwriter whose career bridges popular music, cinema, academia and cultural diplomacy.

With an MSc in Composition for Screen from the University of Edinburgh and a background in music education, she has built a distinctive body of work spanning feature films, international television series, theater and new media.

A BAFTA Scotland New Talent nominee and European Talent Award nominee (Soundtrack Cologne), Aleksandra has composed for films that have represented Serbia in the Academy Awards and Golden Globe selections, including Dara of Jasenovac and Russian Consul. The film Stitches (dir. Miroslav Terzić), which she scored, won the Europa Cinemas Label for Best European Film at Berlinale Panorama.

Prior to her screen career, Aleksandra rose to prominence in London’s music scene in the 1990s as part of the duo K2, signing with Mismanagement (Chris de Burgh, Rod Stewart, Supertramp). After returning to Serbia, K2 became one of the most influential pop acts in the region, selling over 200,000 copies of their debut album. As a solo artist, she became the first Serbian winner of the MTV Best Adria Act Award.

She founded the music production RAproduction, one of the leading film music production companies in Southeast Europe, with music producer and composer Roman Gorsek. Their successful collaboration spans over two decades, featuring their unique and authentic film music style.

As a lecturer in film music, Aleksandra has given lectures at the American University in Beirut, SAE Institute in Belgrade, Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb, Music Academy in Belgrade, as well as MAKK 2016, Festival of Sound and Film Music - Rovinj 2016, Pedagogical forum 2014, 2015, & 2106. Aleksandra has published her work on film music in the international journal of music "New Sound" and "New Theories" and on songwriting and composing in the book "Serbia: My Case, A New European Generation" (British Council, Serbia).

Aleksandra is a recipient of the Order of Karađorđe’s Star (3rd degree) for her contributions to music and film, and has served as Ambassador for the Council of Europe’s "1 in 5" campaign against child abuse.

Her work increasingly operates within the framework of international cultural representation and creative diplomacy.
