Filippos Koutsaftis(I)

Filippos Koutsaftis is a Greek cinematographer and documentary filmmaker known for his contemplative visual approach and his focus on memory, history and landscape. He studied filmmaking in Athens after initially studying mechanical engineering and has worked as director of photography on numerous feature films, television productions and documentaries. His work extends into theater, where he has also contributed as a lighting designer for stage, music and dance performances. As a filmmaker, he is particularly recognized for documentaries that explore Greece through its archaeological and cultural traces, treating the past as an active presence within the contemporary landscape. His documentary feature, Zakros (2023), was selected for the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival. Across his career, Koutsaftis has developed a distinctive cinematic language that blends observational filmmaking with a reflective exploration of space, time and cultural memory.
