Biography

Al Kooper was born on February 5, 1944 in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He is a composer and actor, known for Sneakers (1992), Cry-Baby (1990) and Ricky Stanicky (2024). He is married to Susan Joy Monosson.

Former member of 1950s rock group The Royal Teens (although not when they had their hit, "Short Shorts"; he joined the group quite a while after that) and founded the '60s rock band Blood Sweat & Tears.

Producer of the first three albums by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The original music director of the all author band "The Rock Bottom Remainders" featuring Dave Barry, Stephen King and Amy Tan (among many others).

Jimi Hendrix gave Kooper one of his Fender Stratocaster guitars, which Kooper later used to record soundtrack music for Crime Story (1986).
