- After the Pearl Harbor attack, her father was arrested by the FBI, and died in prison six weeks later. She and the rest of her family were sent to an internment camp in Arkansas. She was released in 1944 to help run a USO center in Mississippi. It was there that she met her future husband, a member of the highly-decorated 442nd Regimental Combat Team made up almost entirely of Japanese-American soldiers.
- Survived by her daughter, Audee Kochiyama-Holman, sons, Eddie, Jimmy, and Tommy, granddaughter, Akemi Kochiyama, and eight other grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, her son, Billy, and her daughter, Aichi, predeceased.
