Added his middle initial to his screen name to avoid receiving fan mail intended for David Hasselhoff addressed to the name Michael Knight. (the name of Hasselhoff's character on the TV series Knight Rider).

Upon graduating with a theater arts degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut in 1980, he moved to New York to attend Circle in the Square Theatre School and graduated in 1982. Later that same year, he booked his first stint as Tad Martin on "All My Children.".

Michael E. Knight was married to Catherine Hickland who was married to David Hasselhoff. David Hasselhoff played Michael Knight on "Knight Rider". Catherine Hickland also made a couple of guest appearances on the show. Justin Bruening who played Michael E. Knight's son on "All My Children" would go on to play Michael Knight on the remake of "Knight Rider".

Michael has been a frequent visitor on America Online. His first visit was August 30, 1995 and he has been coming on line in as much as his busy schedule allows. He has made many "Cyber-Pals" and his fans love getting to know him.

Was romantically involved with his All My Children (1970) castmate Marcy Walker in the early 1980s.

The first of six actors to win a Daytime Emmy for Supporting Actor after having previously won Younger Actor (Tad, AMC: Supporting in 2001 & Younger in 1986/1987), along with Rick Hearst, Kristoff St. John, Jonathan Jackson, Scott Clifton, and Bryton James. Three of those - Knight, St. John, and Clifton - eventually garnered Lead Actor noms, with Clifton being the only one to win.

He and a costar rank fourth in having the most Daytime Emmy nominations for acting on AMC. The Top 5 are: Susan Lucci (21 noms), David Canary (16 noms), Julia Barr (8 noms); James Mitchell and Michael E. Knight (7 noms); and Debbi Morgan (5 noms). All but Mitchell won at least once.

The first of six recipients to win two Daytime Emmys for Younger Actor (Tad, AMC: 1986/1987) during the category's existence from 1985-2019, along with GL's Kevin Mambo, GH's Jonathan Jackson, GL's Tom Pelphrey, DAYS' Chandler Massey, and GH's Bryan Craig. Jackson and Massey ended up three-peating.
