Kibbee drowned while trying to save his six-year-old son, who had been swept out to sea by a large wave on a beach in Cabo San Lucas, where Kibbee had just begun working as a story editor on Land's End (1995), a short-lived television series filming there. The son also drowned, while Kibbee's eight-year-old son was rescued by a bystander.
