Biography

Bill Kenwright (1945-2023) was one of the most prolific and influential figures in British theatre, known for producing more West End and touring productions than any other individual of his era. Born in Liverpool, Kenwright initially found fame as an actor, most notably playing the character Gordon Clegg in the long-running soap opera Coronation Street during the late 1960s. However, he soon shifted his focus behind the scenes, founding Bill Kenwright Ltd and becoming a powerhouse in the theatrical world.

His career as a producer was defined by a remarkable ability to spot commercial hits and nurture long-running classics. He was the driving force behind the phenomenal success of the musical Blood Brothers, which ran for over two decades in London, and he produced the record-breaking tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Over his five-decade career, he brought hundreds of plays and musicals to the stage, earning numerous Olivier and Tony Awards while providing early career opportunities for countless actors and directors.

Beyond the stage, Kenwright was equally famous for his deep-rooted passion for football. A lifelong supporter of Everton FC, he joined the club’s board in 1989 and served as its chairman from 2004 until his death. Under his leadership, the club maintained its top-flight status and reached the 2009 FA Cup Final. He was widely respected within the sport for his unwavering loyalty to the "Toffees" and his commitment to the Liverpool community.

Kenwright was also a noted philanthropist and film producer, known for his work on movies like Cheri (2009) and The Games Maker (2014). He was awarded a CBE in 2001 for his services to film and theatre. He lived for many years with his long-term partner, the actress Jenny Seagrove, and remained an active, hands-on producer until his passing in October 2023.
