Biography

He left drama school in 1980 with little ambition, but during an audition he caught the eye of a director who offered him a part of playing Warren Mitchell's son in a West End play. When Kevin said that he didn't have an Equity Card, he was told to forget it, but he pleaded and begged them to give him a chance. They did to keep him quiet, resulting him in been seen on the Friday and given the job on the Monday. The play Ducking Out ran for seven months, during which Warren taught him a lot. Next, he was offered a tour in a play about a Manchester Grammar school. It was while he appeared in this in Cardiff, that he was offered a part in Coronation Street. This meant an early morning train dash. He arrived at the studios to be told 'You're Curly Watts, start on Sunday' . He did a couple of episodes, then went to Sheffield's Crucible Theatre to play the grave digger in Hamlet, not knowing if he'd be invited back. However, his character of Curly caught on, with fan mail pouring into the studios, so he was quickly asked back as a permanent cast member.

As well as an actor, he is also a musician and fronts the country-rock band The Bunch of Thieves. He has also guested with The Saw Doctors. As a youth, he played in a band called The Paris Valentinoes, with Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke, who would later join Morrissey to form the legendary alternative rock band The Smiths.

Checked into a clinic suffering from alcohol abuse having slipped and cut his head open on the set of Coronation Street (1960). Took lengthy time off to recover.

He has a son, Ryan Williams, from his first marriage. He has two daughters, Katie May (b. 20 January 2004) and Grace, from his marriage to Clare Kennedy.

On 'The Street': "I miss the people because I grew up with a lot of them. I also miss the job. I have no axe to grind. I orginally joined for four episodes and so 20 years' work out of four episodes is very good going. I can't complain, it's done me a lot of favour."
