He plays amateur rugby.

He trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, England whose alumni include Terence Stamp, Elizabeth Knowelden, Hugh Bonneville, Rupert Friend, Antony Sher, Daniel Hunt, Matthew Goode, Sue Johnston, Minnie Driver and Julian Fellowes.

He became a father for the first time at age 46 when Nicola Coleman gave birth to their son in October 2010.

He became a father for the third and fourth time at age 53 when his second wife, Renee O'Brien, gave birth to their twin daughters, Ava and Kitty Kemp, on 28 September 2017.

Like his former EastEnders (1985) co-star Ian Reddington (who played market inspector Richard "Tricky Dicky" Cole), he is known to be a major supporter of the Labour Party. Kemp even considered standing as an MP.

In 1997, he contracted malaria while in Africa and lost two-and-a-half stone.

He became famous for playing tough guy Grant Mitchell in BBC soap "EastEnders".

He is one of seven EastEnders (1985) actors to have won a Best Actor Award at the British Soap Awards; the others are Joe Absolom, Martin Kemp, Shane Richie, Robert Kazinsky, Scott Maslen and Adam Woodyatt.

As of 2017 he is the ninth-longest serving actor in the history of EastEnders (1985) (tied with Dean Gaffney and Shaun Williamson), and behind only Adam Woodyatt, Steve McFadden, Perry Fenwick, Sid Owen, Rudolph Walker, a tied Mike Reid and Todd Carty, John Bardon, and a tied Bill Treacher, James Alexandrou, Derek Martin, Jake Wood and Jamie Borthwick), having played the character Grant Mitchell intermittently for 10 years (initially from 1990 until 1999, then 2005 until 2006, and then briefly in 2016).

He became a father for the second time at age 50 when his second wife, Renee O'Brien, gave birth to their son, Leo Kemp, on 9 April 2015.

His first job after drama school was in 'Staircase' in rep.

He was ranked #4 in the 100 Greatest EastEnders (1985) Characters of All Time for his performance as Grant Mitchell (2010).
