In the 1980s, future husband Steve Smith was the electrician with the Scottish camera crew used by Kelly for her regional reports. When both cameraman and soundman were sacked during the TV-am ACTT dispute in 1988, Smith assumed the role of cameraman.

A huge fan of David Bowie, who she once said would be her dream interviewee. She never did get to interview him before his death on January 10, 2016.

She received the Outstanding Contribution to Television at the 2014 British Academy Scotland Awards.

She was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2012 Queen's New Years Honours List for her services to charity and the Armed Forces.

She was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to Broadcasting, Journalism and Charity. She is a television presenter in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, England.

With her Hollywood-based showbiz cohort, Nelson Aspen, Lorraine presented "OILA" Awards for the most outrageous stories..."Only in L.A.". These included "Pec implants for Men", "celebrity slumber parties", "talking toilet paper rolls", "Personal Trainers for Pooch", and "Fairy School".

She has one daughter, Rosie Smith, with her husband Steve Smith.

During her early presenting career, three of her most unlikely interviewees were members of the progressive rock group Marillion, Fish (a fellow Scot), Steve Hogarth and Mark Kelly. These were difficult interviews for her, as she didn't know anything about the band.
