Katz was a Varsity oarsman at Williams College and rowed on the only undefeated eight in Williams College history.

Frank Sheeran, the subject of the film The Irishman, was a close confidante of Katz's father. David Bar Katz knew him since childhood and was one of the first people Sheeran told about killing Jimmy Hoffa.

Katz is the Executive Director of The American Playwriting Foundation which administers The Relentless Award, bestowing the largest cash prize in American theater, 45k, to an unproduced new play. Katz founded the award in honor of his friend and collaborator, Philip Seymour Hoffman and his relentless passion for American theater.
