- Maria Karnilova was born on August 3, 1920 in Hartford, Connecticut, USA. She was an actress, known for The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964), Married to the Mob (1988) and Ivan the Terrible (1976). She was married to George S. Irving. She died on April 20, 2001 in Manhattan, New York, USA.

- Created the role of "Golde" opposite Zero Mostel's "Tevye" in the original Broadway production of "Fiddler on the Roof" in 1964. Despite the huge success of this production, she had a very bad time working with Mostel, she claimed, and said that the producers had had such a difficult time trying to curb his tendency to ad-lib new lines and business that when, quite early in the show's phenomenally long run, Mostel said that he wanted to leave the production, there were no attempts to dissuade him.
- Won Broadway's 1965 Tony Award as Best Supporting or Featured Actress (Musical) for "Fiddler on the Roof." She also received a second Tony nomination in 1969 for "Zorba," this time as Best Actress (Musical).
- Born in Hartford, Connecticut to immigrant parents from what was then Imperial or Tsarist Russia, Filip Dovgolenko (later known as Philip Dowholonok) and Stefanida Shlonskaya, she was initially known professionally as Maria Karniloff, and later as Maria Karnilova. She died in 2001, aged 80, from causes which have never been disclosed, survived by her husband, George S. Irving, and their children.
