Biography

Walter Karig was born on November 13, 1898 in Alexandria, Virginia, USA. He was a writer, known for Suspense (1949), Zotz! (1962) and The Ford Theatre Hour (1948). He was married to Eleanor Karig. He died on September 30, 1956 in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.

A former US Navy captain, he wrote a number of naval history works on Allied operations during World War II. He authored scripts for the television series Victory at Sea (1952). Besides writing naval history, he also worked as a journalist and wrote a number of novels.

For the Stratemeyer Syndicate he wrote volumes in the "Perry Pierce" series (2-4), "Doris Force" series (3-4) and "Nancy Drew" series (8-10). He revealed to catalogers at the Library of Congress that he was the true author of three Nancy Drew volumes. The catalogers assumed he wrote all of the books under the pseudonym of "Carolyn Keene"--the series' credited writer--and this admission aroused the ire of the publisher. All of the books, as it turned out, were the work of ghostwriters, and the publisher had no desire to reveal the true authorship of volumes in the various series.

His wife Eleanor had served as superintendent of art for the Portsmouth and Newport News school districts.
