- His interest in film-making led him to enroll at the Kalabharathi Film Institute in Thrissur. Thrasam (1981), directed by Padiyan, gave him his start into the industry as a writer, but as a director, he is held in high regard by his peers.
- Has directed more than 32 movies, among which include two non-Malayalam movies, one each in Tamil and Hindi.
- Won the Kerala State Award for Best Director for Ulladakkam (1991), Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value for Mazhayethum Munpe (1995), Director of the Second Best Film in 2000 & 2001, Best Screenplay Writer for Meghamalhar (2001), and for Director of Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value in 2002.
