Biography

  • Antonis Kafetzopoulos is a highly respected Greek actor, director, and screenwriter who has enjoyed a prolific career across theater, television, and film. He began his education at the Zografeion Lyceum before moving to Athens, where he completed high school. Although he initially enrolled to study Economics and Political Science at the University of Thessaloniki in 1969, he chose to withdraw after two years to pursue a creative path. Before fully committing to acting, Kafetzopoulos worked as a record company executive and a music sound engineer, experiences that broadened his perspective on the entertainment industry. He eventually studied acting at the Eugenia Chatzikou Drama School. His professional stage debut was a prestigious one, performing alongside the legendary Ellie Lambeti in Filumena Marturano. He soon became a household name in Greece through his roles in popular television series such as Astrofengia (1980) and To minore tis avgis (1983), as well as his performance in the film Parangelia! (1980). Throughout his career, he has garnered significant international acclaim. In 2009, he was awarded the Best Actor Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival for his leading role in Akadimia Platonos (2009). He followed this success in 2011 by winning the Silver Shell for Best Actor at the San Sebastian International Film Festival for his performance in Unfair World (2011). Beyond his acting credits, Kafetzopoulos is a passionate advocate for science communication. He co-hosted the science-themed show Evrika (2004) and has served as a judge for the Famelab competition. His directorial work often reflects these interests, such as his production of the play 17th Night, which explored Gödel's incompleteness theorem. In addition to his artistic endeavors, he has been active in public service, having served as a municipal counselor and deputy mayor for the City of Athens.
