Biography

Her father is from Zimbabwe and her mother is of Irish, Danish, Norwegian, and English descent.

Tinashe means "we are with God" in Shona.

Has a black belt in Taekwondo..

Started off as a member of a girl group named The Stunners, put together by pop star Vitamin C.

Has said that she prefers the normal life to the life of Hollywood fame. She has had the same car for five years - a small Audi sports car in black - and she even lives at home with her parents.

I don't like being told what to do. It's easy for people to marginalize you - if they hear you do a certain type of song, they expect that from you every time. But that's so boring!

[on her writing style] I write a lot of it in my car, that's just a very inspiring place to listen to music. I think it puts me in the zone. I just think of melodies usually and then lyrics come after. Sometimes really easily, and then sometimes I'll have a melody for a week before I come up with any lyrics so it just kind of depends.

I'm just really inspired by R&B, hip-hop, and alternative music so I just wanted to combine all three of those for the sound. And the type of person I am, I just find darkness interesting in a way. I just love songs that sound like a little crazy, I think it creates an interesting juxtaposition between my voice because it is so bright, and soft, and like pretty, and sweet that I don't want my music to come across sweet or nice. I do like the opposite, so I think of something that's dark and heavy and then I put like sweet and light on top.

[on being bullied in school] I actually did get bullied a lot in school. I went to public school until 9th grade and had a pretty bad experience. I missed out on prom and graduation and the whole college experience but I don't feel bad about it because everything else I was doing was what I actually wanted.

I think it's important to have a hand in every single aspect of your career, from the creation of the music, to the art, to the music videos, to the production of the music, everything.
