For the longest time, being a filmmaker and producer living in western Canada was difficult. There was a group of us in the 1980s who used to laugh about the 'thousand dollar cup of coffee...' What it was, was the trip back east to meet with a broadcaster or 'Téléfilm' for a license or funding. After the flight, hotel and your vehicle, the trip to have a face-to-face over coffee cost $1,000...

The Beachcombers (1972): The thought of us being out there on barges or shooting off some dock somewhere was unheard of. So, essentially, the ability to find a location, park the trucks around it and turn it into a mini studio... Philip Keatley was the forerunner of that concept, by finding a location that worked for a series, then bringing everything to it.

A lot of people in the entertainment business just wouldn't fit anywhere else.

...I'd rather make a movie of the week instead of a TV pilot. A television movie can go to series and/or be sold as a MOW to the different markets.
