According to the Social Security Death Index, Joyzelle Joyner's last name was Brand at the time of her death.

American performer of exotic (and erotic) Oriental dance routines, who came to notoriety for her role as Ancaria in The Sign of the Cross (1932). Earlier, in August 1927, she was twice shot and wounded by her jealous husband who subsequently absconded. In 1929, Joyzelle married the director Phil Rosen. She came to public notice again a year later, dancing in futuristic attire in Just Imagine (1930). After "Sign of the Cross", the novelty had worn off and Joyzelle was relegated to minor supporting roles for the rest of the decade.

Her first name was made up. Her parents simply liked the way it sounded.

Along with Maureen O'Sullivan, she was one of only two credited cast members of Just Imagine (1930) who were still alive in 1980, the year in which the film takes place. Joyner died on November 30, 1980, coincidentally only one week after the 50th anniversary of the film's release.

She had one younger brother named Clarence.
