- When casting for the radio series for "The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy" radio show began, it was requested that the voice of The Book have a "Peter Jonesy sort of voice". After three or four people (including Michael Palin) had turned it down, the search for the Peter Jonesy sort of voice narrowed in on Peter Jones himself. He said numerous times that he was quite bewildered by "Hitch Hiker's" itself, and even more by the cult following it gathered.
- Prior to the broadcast debut of The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1981), he filmed an "introduction" sequence which was used for a test-screening of episode 1. This is the only time he appeared on-screen in the Hitch Hiker's series. The video is included as a supplement on the DVD release.
- Met Peter Ustinov several times during 2nd world war and each time improvised conversations assuming different characters. Someone at the BBC heard them and asked them to do a radio programme In All Directions which led both of them into show business careers.
- His wife, Jeri Sauvinet, was an American theater actress. She played Miss Rufford in "Lady Windermere's Fan" comedy play, written by Oscar Wilde.
- He had two sons, including Bill Dare; and a daughter, Selena Carey-Jones, with his wife, Jeri.
- A sample of him saying "nibbled to death by an okapi" (from "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy") can be heard at the end of "Smash It Up" by The Damned.
- Was a long-standing panellist on the BBC Radio 4 show "Just a Minute!" from the start of its sixth season, taking part in 332 editions between October 1971 to January 2000.
