During the Australian tri-series in 1991-92, Jones controversially asked legendary fast bowler Curtly Ambrose to remove his signature wrist bands when the latter was taking his run up. Although Ambrose complied after much discussion, he also ended taking match winning figures of 5-32. Jones later regretted the incident.

Voted by Wisden as the 4th greatest ODI batsman of all-time, behind West Indies' Sir Viv Richards, India's Sachin Tendulkar and West Indian Brian Lara.

Had applied for the post of the Indian National Cricket Team's head coach after New Zealander John Wright retired post the 2003 World Cup. However, fellow Australian Greg Chappell got the job. Jones, like most commentators across the world, remained a critic of Chappell's tactics and the disorder he caused in the Indian team.

During the first test at Chennai on the tour of India in 1986/87, Jones had reached his century batting under severe heat with temperatures rising upto 45 degree Celsius and was constantly vomiting on the field due to dehydration. During lunch, he insisted skipper Allan Border that he be declared retired ill. Border, in order to inspire Jones, quipped to him and observing coach Bob Simpson that he'll replace Jones with reserve all-rounder Greg Ritchie for the rest of the tour. Feeling provoked, Jones went back to resume batting post lunch and hit 210 before before being dismissed and had to be carried back to the pavilion on a stretcher. The test ended in a tie, only the second such finish in test history till date and Jones received a momentous applause from the spectators in the stadium for his outstanding innings apart from being jointly awarded Man-of-the-Match alongside Indian captain Kapil Dev.

One of key contributors to Australia's 1987 World Cup triumph, Jones scored 314 runs through the tournament averaging nearly 45 and was instrumental in accelerating the scoring rate due to his quick running between the wickets.
