He graduated from QUT with a BA in acting in 1999 but landed a main role in his first feature film 'City Loop' whilst in his second year of study. He went on to tour with the Sydney Theatre Company, in Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane, to critical acclaim and soon after landed one of the lead roles in the ABC show 'Headstart'. Building on his growing profile, the features 'Thunderstruck', 'The Wannabes' and a regular role on the series 'The Secret Life of Us', placed Ryan firmly on the Australian film and television map. His first international break came when he was cast in the Australian/U.K. collaboration 'Dossa and Joe', written and directed by Caroline Ahern, for BBC1. Ryan has consistently returned to theatre, working with Belvoir St Theatre, The Sydney Theatre Company and for independent companies, including performing at the prestigious Pleasance Dome Theatre for the Edinburgh Festival. In 2011, Ryan was cast in the USA networks 'Fairly Legal' opposite Sarah Shahi, as series regular Ben Grogan. At home, he went on to work in major television such as the TV movie 'Carlotta' (ABC) where he played the romantic lead and recurring roles in House Husbands (Ch9), Love Child (Ch9) and the mini series 'INXS: Never Tear us apart (Ch7). More recently, Ryan is best known for his five season run as Matt Knight, on Channel Nine's ratings blockbuster 'Doctor Doctor'. Since it's finale in 2020, Ryan showcased his comedic craft, as part of the main ensemble in the box office hit film 'How To Please a Woman', recur on STAN's breakout dramedy Bump and will soon be seen making a chilling pivot in the the Channel 7 limited event 'The Claremont Murders' as one of the most notorious crime figures in Australian history. Ryan is best described as a character actor with leading man looks, who has gained a reputation as an artist that can cross effortlessly from stage to screen and comedy to drama. Now in his forties, his incredible body of work is only leading to the next chapter. Ryan plans to continue to stretch himself in roles that work against expectation and collaborate with creatives that inspire and challenge him. In his personal time, he is an obsessive record collector, film fanatic and reader. His favorite role to date is parenting his daughter, who he co-parents with ex wife, screenwriter Tamara Asmar.
