- High-ranking blackbelt in tang soo do, an art which he learned in Korea in exchange for English lessons
- 9th degree black belt in Tang Soo Do under Chuck Norris.
- Served as a chaplain with the United States Army in Korea in 1963.
- Was inducted into the North American Sport Karate Association Hall of Fame in 1993.
- Has four sons, Brett, Garth, Larry and Erik.
