Zannino(1923-1995)

Giannis Papadopoulos (Zannino) was a Greek theatre, film, and television actor known for his distinctive character roles and long-standing presence in popular Greek entertainment. Originally from Istanbul, he moved to Greece during his childhood and grew up in the Piraeus area, where he faced early hardship after the loss of his father. He initially worked in performance-related jobs in music halls and revue-style shows, entering the entertainment world through dance ensembles before gradually transitioning into acting. A chance stage introduction led to the adoption of the name Zannino, which he retained throughout his career and which also became associated with his family in later generations. He developed a steady career in theatre and later became a recognizable figure in Greek cinema, primarily in supporting roles that relied on strong physical presence and comic timing. His work extended into television as well, reflecting his adaptability across different formats of popular performance. He also made a brief appearance in international cinema, including participation in Midnight Express (1978), expanding his visibility beyond Greece. Beyond his acting work, he was associated with the discovery and early theatrical support of Harry Klynn, helping introduce new comedic talent to the stage.
