- Wanda Jakubowska was born on October 10, 1907 in Warsaw, Poland, Russian Empire [now Warsaw, Mazowieckie, Poland]. She was a director and writer, known for The Last Stage (1948), Król Macius I (1958) and Pozegnanie z diablem (1957). She died on February 24, 1998 in Warsaw, Mazowieckie, Poland.
- Jakubowska became a prisoner at the Auschwitz concentration camp after being arrested in 1942 as an active member of the Polish Resistance. Her landmark 1947 film "Ostatni etap" (The Last Stage), based on her experiences, was in part shot on location. It is considered one of the most harrowing holocaust films ever made.
- Studied art history at Warsaw University.
