Biography

Michael Iwan

Biography

  • After graduating the film program at York University, in 1986, i began my career gripping in Toronto. By working as the 3rd grip on the "Twilight Zone", produced by Atlantis, (a show boasting new actors, new directors every week, and a new director of photography every 3 weeks), i secured my membership in the fledgling Canadian Film association ACFC. After 3 years working on network television series, including his first feature film,"Dead Ringers", directed by David Cronenberg, i won a contract to work overseas, working on "Dracula", the series, shot entirely on location, in Luxembourg, for 6 months. Upon returning from Europe, i then wrote, directed, and produced, two documentary films: "On the Streets", (financed by the Catholic Church), profiles the homeless, and The Fred Victor Mission. "Iron Chief Charlie" is a character study focusing on Aging, the Will to Live, and Indian Motorcycles. Independantly produced, funded by the Ontario Film Development Corporation, then sold to CBC Canada. Returning to network television in 1991, i became a member of Nabet 700, contracting myself out as a dolly grip, until 1996.

In the fall of 1996, while visiting Vancouver, i was hired as an A camera dolly grip, on Warriors of Virtue, (a Chinese Feature film, directed by Ronnie Yu and photographed by Peter Pau). There I met Steve Lingard, and started a new career as a camera crane and remote head operator, with Heads Up Camera. With this association, I became a member of IATSE 891, crane operating and dolly gripping, in Vancouver, until 2002. In 2002, by becoming involved with the then new company, Telescopic Camera Cranes, I began his work as a telescopic camera crane operator, in association with owner, Barrie Wells.

After 3 years with TCC, in Vancouver, i then represented the company in Ontario and Montreal, competing with Panavision, PS, and William F. Whites, on camera crane contracts, between 2005-2010.

In 2010, when Telescopic Camera Cranes pulled their equipment out of Eastern Canada, Ireturned to Vancouver, growing with the company, until they were sold, to William f White.
