- During World War II he had to serve in the army and was imprisoned by the Russians near the end of war. After his return to Germany he studied philosophy, German language and literature studies as well as art history. During this time he already made first experiences as a director assistant for Heinz Hilpert.
- His real film career took form in the middle of the 60s when he made his debut as a director for "Das Fräulein an der Kasse" (1964).
