Inspired by Bruce Lee and his own family who was into Judo, Steven Ito began his training at the age of 13 in Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate and Aikido. He also trained in Jeet Kune Do and Kali under Dan Inosanto. Under Hee Il Cho, he trained in Tae Kwon Do and gained his black belt. Ito found that Tae Kwon Do skills contributed to his stunt career.
