Biography

Riyoko Ikeda was born on December 18, 1947 in Osaka, Japan. She is a writer, known for Lady Oscar: The Rose of Versailles (1979), Lady Oscar (1979) and Dear Brother (1991).

She used to be one of the most popular Japanese comic-artists in the 70's.

Gave up drawing comics to pursuit a musical career but failed.

Made a comeback to the comic-industry as a scenarist in 1999.

In 2008, she received France's Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur (National Order of the Legion of Honour) for her contribution to Japan's cultural awareness of France (thanks to the high popularity of her work "The Rose of Versailles").

She is a member of the Year 24 Flower Group, an exclusive club of female manga artists considered to have revolutionized shojo manga, who were born in the era Showa 24 (1949). Included in this group are Yasuko Aoike, Moto Hagio, Keiko Takemiya, Yumiko Ôshima, Toshie Kihara, Ryôko Yamagishi, Minori Kimura, Nanae Sasaya, and Mineko Yamada.
