- Peter Jackson used much of his unique look, mannerisms and facial expressions in the CGI character of "Smeagol/Gollum" in his "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Jackson remembered him from the UK television series, Callan (1967), where his character "Lonely" was a lowlife informant criminal.
- He frequently referred to his ex-wife Caroline Blakiston as "my best friend" after they were divorced.
- Before becoming an actor, he worked in a shipyard on the river Clyde as an apprentice.
- He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
- He was cast to play Willie MacKay in The Highlanders: Episode 2 (1966), but had to pull out and was replaced by Andrew Downie. He went on the appear in the series in The Robots of Death: Part One (1977).
- Appeared at the first ever Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1947 with the Unity Theatre group in "The Plough and the Stars".
