- Big band/jazz trombonist. After spending many years as the star trombonist of Glen Gray's Casa Loma Orchestra, he went out on his own in the mid-1940s as leader of a commercialized "Dixieland" combo. His biggest hits in that capacity were "12th Street Rag" in 1947 and "Oh!" in 1952, both for Capitol Records.
- He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 6838 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California.
