Robert Hughes grew up in the Sydney suburb of Crows Nest, did a journalism cadetship, and studied at the Max Rowley Media Academy. He then started his professional career as a copy boy for a Sydney newspaper before moving into the Australian entertainment industry with a band known as the Flying Circus. This was short-lived, and he began working in the theatre as an actor, in such Sydney productions as Errol Flynn's "Great Big Adventure Book For Boys" and "Macbeth." He appeared in many guest roles in Australian television shows, as well as his own starring role in the Seven Network comedy series Hey Dad..! (1987).

London, England: Arrested and charged with committing 11 assaults against five girls between 1985 and 1990 in Sydney's northern suburbs.
Despite being the star performer for 12 seasons of Hey Dad..! (1987), he has not participated in any "Hey Dad..!" cast reunions.
Extradited to Sydney, Australia, freed on $50,000 bail, and awaiting trial.
Up until the "Hey Dad..! Scandal" broke in 2010, Robert worked regularly as a voice-over artist.

[on ABBA: The Movie, shortly after filming began] It's the best thing I could ever do. I still can't believe it. If it's released in the United States it will be the biggest break I could ever have.
[on why he left Hey Dad..! (1987)] I was feeling stuck in the series - the same routine over and over and over again. 'Hey Dad..!' had been very good to me and it helped raise my profile as an actor. But it was time to move on. I was feeling really stale and it can be debilitating for an actor to be so closely identified with one character. I thought I had to make the break.
[on why he didn't attend his own farewell party thrown by the Hey Dad..! (1987) cast and crew] I didn't know there was a farewell party. I'd organised a big blow-out at home with a stack of people. I wasn't in the final scene of the taping, so when I was finished, I just went, bang, out the door.
[From a 1991 interview with Woman's Day magazine] I'm staying (on Hey Dad..! (1987)) as long as the viewers are laughing and the ratings figures keep coming in.
[From New Idea magazine - May 13, 1989 edition] I've found there is a fine line between publicity and my personal life. I don't like talking about my private life - it is private. If people want to talk to me about work, that is fine, but I do make that distinction. I like to steer away from that sort of thing. I'm not interested in the 'star socialising' and having gossip items about me appear in the papers. That is not part of me at all.
