He retired from the Village People in 1996 and launched a successful New York City cabaret act until he was diagnosed with lung cancer two years later. He had been a heavy smoker since he was a teenager. He was replaced as the Leatherman by Eric Anzalone though he continued with off-and-on management of the band.

He drew his inspiration for the Leatherman character from the gay BDSM leather bar and sex club of one of New York City's notorious gay clubs for men, the Mineshaft's, dress code, which he was a frequent regular. He was also a real-life motorcycle fanatic and kept his motorcycle parked inside his house.
