While he was still in high school, he took private acting lessons with Adolf Dell, who was then employed at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus, and passed his stage matriculation exam.

For many years he was a lecturer at the Hanover University of Music, Theater and Media, where he later became an honorary professor.

Hufschmidt also made a name for himself through his voice. In addition to his participation in almost 100 radio play productions, he was known for extensive readings and recitation evenings. For example, he continuously read from Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time over a period of eight years. He initiated another long-term reading with The Man Without Qualities by Robert Musil. His repertoire also included texts by Goethe, Kleist and Paul Celan's Death Fugue.

From the end of the 1950s and increasingly from the beginning of the 1970s, Hufschmidt was repeatedly in front of the camera. He often impersonated officials such as judges and public prosecutors.
