Biography

Freddie Hubbard was born on April 7, 1938 in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. He was an actor, known for Mid90s (2018), Man with a Gun (1995) and Brown Sugar (2002). He was married to Briggie Hubbard. He died on December 29, 2008 in Sherman Oaks, California, USA.

He played on hundreds of recordings starting in 1958. He influenced a generation of trumpet players, and worked with Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and Thelonious Monk, among others.

As a young musician, he had a fiery, fast playing style. When he got older, he sometimes switched to flugelhorn with a softer, melodic style.

Inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1994.

He studied music at the Arthur Jordan Conservatory and with the Indianapolis Symphony.

[1995 interview in "Down Beat" magazine] I met Trane [John Coltrane] at a jam session at Count Basie's in Harlem in 1958. He said, "Why don't you come over and let's try and practice a little bit together." I almost went crazy. I mean, here is a 20-year-old kid practicing with John Coltrane. He helped me out a lot, and we worked several jobs together.
