Sammy Sheldon Differ (Samantha Howarth) (Costume Designer) was born in Oldham, North Manchester, she studied art and design at Rochdale College of Art.
Sammy has been married twice hence the name changes, she has sometimes been credited as Samantha Howarth, Sammy Sheldon, Sammy Sheldon Differ and Sammy Differ. She is married to editor Ian Differ, they have a daughter Elsa Rose Differ.
Sammy fell in love with film at an early age, watching westerns and Hammer Horror movies and most influentially Star Wars: Episode IV - A new Hope.
After leaving college she started her career at the Royal Exchange Theatre Manchester as an assistant costume maker, under the helm of the inspirational Ginnie O'Brien, learning from costume designers such as David Short, Mark Thompson and Antony Ward. Going on to studied Costume Design at Wimbledon School of Art.
After graduating with a degree, she began work as an assistant designer to David Blight on various theatre productions, she then moved into designing costumes for numerous pop promos and adverts, artists include Pulp's This is hard Core, Jamiroquai, Jamelia, Beverly Knight, Eternal, The Wannadies, Shola Ama, and many more. She also worked on many promos with the directing duo Hammer and Tongs. After designing the TV show Zig and Zags Dirty Deeds for Channel 4 TV, Sammy went on to become an assistant designer to Janty Yates on films including Ridley Scott's Gladiator and Jake Scott's Plunkett & Macleane. She was then fortunate to be asked to design costumes for Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down and the mockumentary Calcium Kid, starring Orlando Bloom. Other film credits include Kick-Ass directed by Matthew Vaughn, Gulliver's Travels directed by Rob Letterman, Kick-Ass 2, The Green Zone directed by Paul Greengrass, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army directed by Guillermo Del Toro, Stardust directed by Matthew Vaughn, Kinky Boots Directed by Julian Jarrold and A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Directed by Garth Jennings.
Television work included the Wall to Wall TV series, Ancient Egyptians, a 4-part docudrama directed by Tony Mitchell.
Sammy has received BAFTA Film nominations for her work on Morten Tyldum's The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley, and Michael Radford's The Merchant of Venice, starring Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons. BAFTA TV nomination for the BBC's modern adaptation of The Canterbury Tales: The wife of Bath. Costume Designers Guild Award nominations for Excellence in Period Film The Imitation Game, and Excellence in Fantasy Film Ex Machina, X-Men: First Class and V for Vendetta. CinEuphoria Award nomination for Annihilation directed by Alex Garland and a Saturn Award nomination for Marvels Eternals directed by Chloe Zhao.
Sammy has been fortunate to work on many different genres of film, period, fantasy, modern, war and superhero, other credits include, Assassin's Creed directed by Justin Kurzel, Marvels Ant- Man directed by Peyton Reed, Jurassic World Fallen: Kingdom directed by J A Bayon, , Marvels Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania directed by Peyton Reed, A Haunting in Venice directed by Kenneth Branagh, and recently released Jurassic World: Rebirth directed by Gareth Edwards.
Sammy next project is Ahsoka Season 2 for Lucas film.
