Has a sister, Jan. Grew up in Warrawee, NSW Australia and went to Knox Grammar School. Dropped out of medicine and law at university. Graduated in 1978 from NIDA with Penny Cook, Robert Grubb. Played leading roles from 1981 to 2012 in various plays. Won a Critics Circle award in 1992 for "The Crucible" and "Mongrels". Twice won Variety Entertainer of the Year (1992,2006). Nominated for an AFI award for "Joh's Jury" and nine times since.Silver logie winner for "Seachange" (2001) . Associate Director of the Sydney Theatre Company from 1992 to 1995. Launched the Australian People's Theatre (associated with the Sydney Theatre Company). Has a daughter born in 1996 and a son from a previous marriage. He is most famous for SeaChange (1998) and All Saints (2008). Ambassador for Variety (The Children's Charity) and Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation ( AMDF ) .

[Talking About Seachange]; The disappointment of finding that Heather had kicked him out of the house, I didn't have to try, I was very disappointed, so was Bob, much more so than me.
But I'm still a baby right. When I get better then I'll show the things that I really want to do for myself, all the stuff on Instagram [of animals] are things people have asked me to paint.
The first time I did it I went and spoke to about 45 real estate agents and shire presidents and various developers and went to little towns around Victoria ... and getting the way he walked and talked and what his attitudes were and I like to use real people to give me a start to give me inspiration.
It certainly surprised me because I've never painted before. I think it was just watching Sophie paint and then you know I'd finished cleaning all her 148 million brushes so I just started doing it. It seems I have a kind of a feeling for it because the people who see it say, 'wow you've got the spirit, you can feel the painting', so that's pretty cool.
I think everyone from the age of five through to 105 will love it because it goes like the clappers, it's very funny, very moving and a little bit eccentric ... The vibe of the show is just like last time except that it's set now.
