Occasional actor and stage director. From 1954, he studied drama, German language and literature and art history at the Free University of Berlin. He staged his first performances at the student stage of the Institute of Theatre Studies, took acting lessons during his studies and passed the final exam to become an actor. From 1955 to 1960, he was engaged as an assistant director at the Renaissance Theater in Berlin. His teachers included Paul Verhoeven, Axel von Ambesser, Leo Mittler, Leonhard Steckel, Kurt Meisel, Viktor de Kowa and Harry Meyen. In 1962 he completed his studies with a PhD.
