Growing up in the California desert, and creating art amid its extreme, sometimes harsh conditions, has bestowed Derrick Hinman with a sense of urgency and the ability to overcome the unforeseen pitfalls of the filmmaking process. Practicing and studying Fine Art, especially Conceptualism for many years, gave him the visionary background to ask the right questions and observe reality from all angles. As a photographer, he is a constant and keen observer of the world around him, soaking it in, and continuously learning from those observations.
As a Production Designer for feature films, he is given the opportunity to immerse himself in a story, and then use his imagination to create a world for the camera to explore that inspires the viewer. This visual web, encompassing all the elements of film (story, character, tone, aesthetic, etc) is his playground and his passion.
Derrick Hinman won HRIFF Award for 'Best Production Design' for his work in 'Love Scene' in 2014.
