A 1897 graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, for over twenty years Fred Hayn worked at the United States Patent Office, in Washington, D.C., rising to the post of First Assistant Examiner, while supplementing his income writing articles and screenplays. He went to law school, and moved to Los Angeles around 1925, setting himself up in business as a patent attorney.
