Charles Hawtrey was born on September 21, 1858 in Eton, England, UK. He was an actor and writer, known for A Message from Mars (1913), The Private Secretary (1935) and Honeymoon for Three (1915). He was married to Katherine Elsie Emma Petre and Madeline 'Mae' Harriet. He died on July 30, 1923 in Marylebone, London, England, UK.

He was created a Knight Bachelor in the 1922 King's New Year Honours List for his services to drama.

Comedic actor Charles Hawtrey (whose real full name is George Frederick Joffe Hartree) took his name from him.

His two marriages bore no children; however, in 1906, with an unmarried actress called Olive Morris, a cousin of actress Dame Ellen Terry and 26 years his junior, he had a son, Anthony Hawtrey, who was raised by his mother only.
