- Graduate of the Yale School of Drama with an MFA in playwriting.
- In 1987, Tim Hatcher was a recipient of the six-month Dobie Paisano Fellowship presented by the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Institute of Letters. The play he wrote during the fellowship ("The Death of Floyd Collins") was eventually produced in Texas, Kentucky and New York. He submitted this play along with his application to the Yale School of Drama, and was accepted in 1991.
- Studied filmmaking under writer/director Andy Anderson at the University of Texas at Arlington, the instructor he credits with convincing him to pursue animation as a career. His classmates there included future producer/director/animator Keith Alcorn and future director of photography Paul Hughen.
